چکیده

(1) a. Inflectional paradigms aspire to “avoid homophony”. The Russian nominative singular and genitive plural endings reflect a transderivational attempt to minimize homophony across inflectional endings. b. Inflectional paradigms require transderivational reference: one cannot compute the Russian genitive plural without knowing what the nominative singular ending is. c. How Lexical Conservatism Can Lead to Paradigm Gaps

The goals of this paper are twofold. First, I provide empirical generalizations regarding paradigmatic gaps in the Russian genitive plurals. Second, I propose an analysis of these facts in terms of inviolable lexical conservatism conditions. The main idea behind Lexical Conservatism is that speakers are hesitant introducing forms that would create a new allomorph of an existent morpheme. I reje...

Markedness and Blocking in German Declensional Paradigms

The loss of regular case endings in modern German has led to highly syncretic noun paradigms that neutralise many of the distinctions retained in more conservative determiner and adjective paradigms. Genitive and dative are, for all intents and purposes, the only cases marked in noun paradigms. Strong nonfeminine nouns have a genitive singular in -s. Strong nouns whose plural ends in a schwa or...

Interaction of morphological and phonological markedness in Russian genitive plural allomorphy

This paper incorporates morphological markedness constraints into a framework in which morphology and phonology directly interact, modeled with interleaving of morphological and phonological constraints in serial OT (Wolf 2008, 2009). Morphological markedness constraints are constraints against realization (or spell-out) of morphologically marked feature sets. The empirical data motivating this...

Bridging Corpus for Russian in comparison with Czech

In this paper, we present a syntactic approach to the annotation of bridging relations, socalled genitive bridging. We introduce the RuGenBridge corpus for Russian annotated with genitive bridging and compare it to the semantic approach that was applied in the Prague Dependency Treebank for Czech. We discuss some special aspects of bridging resolution for Russian and specifics of bridging annot...
